A way of explaining, seeing, and interpreting something; an explanatory tool that simultaneously enables and limits our understanding of the particular social product, practice, or process under investigation. [1]
Background
Although the term theory can be used to describe many types of theories, its relation to the course simplifies the list. The book uses theories as a partial explanation to a phenomenon being studies.
Uses in other disciplines
Theorys in general are used to give explanations to all sorts of phenomenons and problems. A famous theory for example is the big bang theory. The question of how was the earth created had many at odds of how. This theory came to fruition since there are evidences of a possible big bang, but it is just an explanation, not concrete. So, the term theory can and is used in different subjects and professions.
