Exoticism is images of foreign lands and bodies that romanticize or mystify other cultures.

Background

Exoticism is a trend in European art, influenced by some ethnic groups from the late 19th century. This can be seen through several genres of the period including music, painting, and decorative art. Exoticism can be said to be "the charm of the unfamiliar."

Uses in other disciplines

In music, exoticism is a genre where the rhythms, melodies, or instrumentation are made to evoke the atmosphere of far away lands.
